Orderly book, 1812-1819.

Orderly book kept from 28 Dec. 1812 to 7 Dec. 1819 by "The Rangers," a light infantry company of the Massachusetts Militia (1st Division, 3rd Brigade, 3rd Regiment). The company was commanded by Captains Henry Rice, David Francis, George Bond, and Martin Brimmer successively; its original name was the "Suffolk Sentinels." The orderly book contains the company's constitution; a list of members' names, heights, and dates of entry; minutes of meetings held at Boston (Mass.) and Fort Strong on Noddle's Island (Boston), printed copies of general, brigade, and regimental orders tipped in; and an index. Subjects include the War of 1812, elections of officers, military exercises, courts martial, deaths, expenses, uniforms, equipment and supplies.

Ten companies comprised the 12th Regiment, Massachusetts Volunteer Militia: five from Boston, one from North Bridgewater, one from Abington, one from Weymouth, one from Stoughton, and one from Gloucester. After organization was completed, the regiment was ordered to Fort Warren in Boston Harbor.
